AMERIGO Vespucci and Columbus never sailed together. Vespucci, while being a cartographer, was primarily an explorer. He is credited with being the one to acknowledge the Americas as new continents (Columbus thought he had reached Asia til he died). His accounts of his travels were well read and inspired a mapmaker named Martin Waldseemüller to name the new continents after his favorite explorer. His maps sold well and the name stuck. He was Italian by birth, Spanish by naturalization, and sailed for both Spain and Portugal.

It's new to me that Vespucci ever met Columbus I'm lean to believe that they didn't live during the same century.
