You need a lot of patience, that is the KEY, and unless you have a lot of time, you probably should not even start this program, but if you want a horse to jump, you start by putting a pole ON the ground and get the horse to go over it. Horses do not like to step on things, so it will step or hop over it. If the horse is trotting or running, he will naturally 'jump' over it, even if it's low.

Then you put it up off the ground a few inches on blocks, and the horse will jump just a little higher to avoid stepping on the pole. Do NOT punish the horse if he won't jump over it, just try again later. Talk to your horse constantly and quietly so that he gets used to listening to you.
Eventually you can put it up 2 or 3 feet and the horse will jump over it with ease. When it gets any higher than that, you must start guaging the horse's approach to make sure he is NOT too far, and NOT too close to jump the barrier. ALWAYS make sure the barrier can 'fall over' easily in case he hits it to avoid damage to his legs and hoofs and maybe the rider too.

Horses are extremely intelligent animals, as will be attested by qualified trainers. A horse needs to be smart to survive as prey animal - and it will outsmart a human any day, if the human has no clue about handling a horse.

If you have never trained a horse before, you should not attempt to undertake it. It requires expertise and the ability to "talk" the horses' language. Without knowledge and having had "hands-on" training yourself, you will ruin your horse.

If you want to play an active role in training your own horse, sign up for a horse handling clinic. Many qualified natural horsemenship trainers offer clinics to which you can bring your own horse.

You might also want to get some literature (Lyons, Parelli, Gawani Pony Boy, Clinton Anderson to name a few) and read up on natural horsemenship.

Don't leave your horse with someone, who just claims to be a trainer, but doesn't know the first thing about horses (you find them on this board by the dozen). Plenty of horses are being mistreated by so-called "trainers", it is always best to ask your local equine rescue group whether they can recommend a responsible, trusted trainer (many equine rescue groups also offer horse handling clinics you can sign up for)

It takes A LOT of dedication. Horses are rather stupid animals (This is coming from a mommy of four horses, who has trained each and every one of them from birth herself). If they were smarter, they'd KNOW the damage they could do to us.

With that, they need repetitive training. There is no short answer. It's lengthy and detailed. I'd suggest you get a trainer, or, if you have a SPECIFIC question (IE: How do I make my horse less headshy? How do I teach him to jump? How do I make my horse less giddy under saddle? How do I teach a horse to dock?) We can help you specifically. Otherwise, it's a broad, generalized question

This question cannot be answered here, because the answer is very complex and lengthy. Plus there are hundreds ofpossible answers - so if you need a horse trained, I suggest you get a professional or take lessons fro a trainer!

With patience and knowing exactly what you're doing. Having a qualified trainer to guide both of you along is good too.

you need a qualified trainer to do it. I know people who tried to do it themselves, and they ended up taking the horse to a trainer. So PLEASE take my advice, do NOT try to do it yourself! It is better for you and your horse!

either be more specific or people will think you know nothing about training and you will not get good answers.
