I went to Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid last Christmas, stay there a month, and we don't have any problem with thieves. You have to stay where the people are, not solitary streets. I was with my husband and two children and we have a very good trip.
Barcelona has a good move (movida) and in two days you should see the Gaudi Masterpieces, Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell and his houses. I also recommend the magic fountain in Montjuic but it only play on some days. You have to verify the days and times. There is the Tibidabo, a small amusement park, but if you only have to days you should go another time.
I like the Pueblo Español in Montjuic and visit the Zoo.

The lovely people above have covered the main things to do. I've been a few times, each time with very different travelling companions and found a different city each time. I went with my mum when I was fifteen and saw almost everything Gaudi ever built, some incredible Picasso's and Miro's etc.
I then went with guys from work a few years later, have never partied so hard, one day I had a hangover so bad it made me cry, after a night of having a great time in the centre and getting ourselves into a tiny bar which had a lock in.
I've since been with my lovely lady and we had a beautiful time going round the shops and restaurants.
Each time we just wandered round to see what we fancied doing and did it.
Don't worry about the crime thing any more than you would in any city.
Have a good time.

Sagrada Famillia and Parc Guell (and any other Gaudi sites you can manage)
La Ramblas
The Magic Fountains- at night a mixture of lights, music and water-fantastic and it's free! Check it out to make sure they are on- the first time we went to Barca they weren't and we sat for a very long time waiting. The second time we went (Dec last year) they were on, starting every halfhour from 7 or 8 pm.
Plus to get the most out of your time I suggest a two day Barcelona Card- when you buy one you don't need to buy tickets for the metro and some bus services and you get discounts on loads of attractions and resturants- a good time and money saver, especially when you only have two days in Barcelona. We got our Barcelona cards at the tourist info office in the airport, although they can be gotten in other places, but this way we saved money from the start on the aiport bus.
ALso recommend the funicular railway up to Mountjuic- the view from Mountjuic castle allows for some fantastic panarama shots of the whole city

Is your first time in the city, I will recommended the Touristic Bus. You can take it in Plaza Cataluña in the front of El Corte Ingles. There are to routes the red and the blue. The buses stop at Gaudi's principal attractions like La Sagrada Familia, Parque Guel and Casa Mila. You can also stop an Montduic, the Olympic site the aquarium and others interesting stops. You also can take the metro to move in the city. I recommend that you begin your visit at Plaza Cataluña where you can walk Las Ramblas or Paseo de Gracia or walk the Barrio Gotico. Barcelona is a beautifully city and believe me you can't get bored there, to much to see and two days aren't enough. Similar to other European cities the peoples like to walk the streets up to late hours. Eating, shopping and nightlife's are excellent.

Two days? Don't miss these things:
- Parc Guell (take the Metro to Vallarca and follow the signs to ascend on the eslcalators, then leave the park by the famous lizard and follow the signs downhill to the other metro station)
- Casa Mila & Passeig de Gracia
- Las Ramblas
- Sagrada Familia (don't pay to go inside the site if you're short on time- just check the view from outside)
- Picasso Museum (if you like Picasso) or MACBA (if you like contemporary art)
- Dinner at Les Quinze Nits (in Placa Reial- queueing and watching the street entertainment is part of the experience- fine dining at rock-bottom prices)
See my personal Barcelona website for opening times, prices, my personal opinions and photos.
