Do songs need guitar solos? I've been playing guitar for about two and a half years now and I love soloing. A lot of today's music has made solos a thing of the past. What is your opinion on the topic? What kind of solos do you like? Jazz? Shred?

Yep. I love them in all types of music, especially when they involve particularly tricky playing techniques.

Any kind of guitar solo interests me, whether it is country, rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass, anything. As long as it is a guitar playing, it catches my attention. I think most songs need a guitar solo, but I guess it depends if it fits or not. Bring back the solos!

I have been playing guitar for a few years now, I play styles ranging from death metal to classical finger picking methods. I cant stand drawn out solos. Its easy to make somthing with fingertapping sound impressive, but really its not needed. It seems like alot of bands try to add "value" to their songs with a 2 minute shread.

i like them, but it turned into a necessity back in the 70s and 80s for r&r and other genres. i liked the who because they didnt have them, just relied on power chords. its hard to do a jazz or blues tune without them. one of my favorites is david gilmores solo on the live version of on the turning away.
