It adds a lot more drama when the mom dies. Everyone knows they really need their mother, but sometimes they don't realize till they are older that they need their dad. So for little kids they understand the emotions better when the mom dies.

Actually, most of Disney's stories are based on fables, myths, and lore. It is actually a testament to mothers that families tend to fall apart with out them, but eventually the people get through the traumas and live their lives.

Now Disney definitely has step-mother issues.

It seems to me that the movies will have one strong parental showing depending on who the movie is geared to.

Eg:
Toy Story and Treasure Planet (although my daughter loves both) are geared towards boys, and if you notice there is only a mother involved in the movie.

The princesses (except for sleeping beauty) all were the apple of their father's eyes... etc... And the if there is a female presence it is the main antagonist in the movie.
