Mexico is part of North America. Central America starts in Guatemala. Specifically, North America stops at the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, south of Mexico. North America consists of Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
The name comes from a Portuguese explorer and mapmaker named Amerigo Vespucci. Martin Waldseemüller, a mapmaker, named the two new continents after his favorite explorer. While he did not discover the Americas (that was all Columbus) Vespucci was the first to acknowledge the Americas as new continents.

All of the new world was named for Amerigo Vespucci (sp?).
When the British colonies, located in America, declared independence from British royal rule, they set themselves up as 13 independent little countries, called states. They also agreed to create a union, much like the European Union created recently, and since they were located in America, they decided to call that union the United States of America.
Mexico, Canada, and the US make up the bulk of North America. However, Mexicans are called Mexicans, not Americans, Canadians are called Canadians, not Americans, and people from the US are called Americans. I suppose the founding fathers could have called us Statesians, or Uniteders, or something silly like that, but it makes more sense to call call us Americans.

America comes from Amerigo Vespuci who first realized that the new continent wasn't Asia. The US simply chose to be the US of (continent) where as Mexico is the name of the region the Spanish established. BTW Central America is part of the continent of North America. The Dividing line is the Isthmus of Panama.
