Plato invented the story, and you can read about it in his dialogues TIMAEUS and CRITIAS. Much of what Plato says is surely fictional -- just read the dimensions of the city, the materials of its walls, the divinity of its creator, and the birth of its citizens. All that stuff is pure fantasy. So the only real question is whether the story is based on some historical fact or legend. There is good reason to believe that it's based, not in ONE historical fact, but many, e.g. the destruction of Thera, the subsidence of the North Bank, and so on. Plato is a master story-teller, but we shouldn't mistake fiction for fact.

FAct: Plato did write about a place he called Atlantis.
Fact: The place Plato called the Republic is thought of as being an idealized place, which in reality might seem a bit totalitarian. Its possible Atlantis is Platos imagination of what a very advanced civilization might be like, similar to how DaVinci imagined/ created his inventions or how Arthur C. Clarke was responsible for satellites.
In terms of the human species, we have had brains at this stage of developemnt fro about 200,000 years. in Australia we see signs of complex calanders adn use of symbolism, as well as advanced tool use and extrapolation of imagined concept to physical reality (making thinks from imagined plans) If 8-10,000 years in the fertile crescent/china/India could develop into ancient India, Babylon, and Egypt then with an additional expans of 190,000 years in the past whne human were just as capable mentally, why couldnt and euqally advance culture/civilization have developed?? There HAVE been catyclysmic events in th epast 200,000 years that could have wiped out a civilization. About 70,000 years ago volcanic eruptions in the phillipines wiped out most of the human species. I recall a documentary about the human species that stated that there were many more "races" of humas prior to that event. We have evidence of the now extince races with remnants of a caucasion culture in northern Japan and another in southern Chile (now also exitnct). Could Atlantis be real and burried under the ice of Antartica due to a dramatic climat shift of sudden rotation of the eart dur to a shift of mangnetic fields? That is also possible.
Its wonderful to think we have so much more to discover about life on this planet.

It makes you think how important it is to get through the next 100 years, as Stephen Hawkin asked, and establish the species on other planets so we can preserve ourselves. Otherwise we could all go the way of "mythical" Atlantis.

Well, i have a theory:

They say that Antarctica was a continent that was pushed underneath the waves by the glacier you see there today, that might be a good place to start looking, though, I don't think there was a civilization on it before it sunk.
Even if i'm wrong i still believe it exists and I agree with that 7th answer, that might be Atlantis.

It is speculated that Plato may have been making reference to what is now called the island of Santorini in the Greek isles. This island has also been referenced as Thera. A cataclysmic event buried an entire city which you can actually go and see parts of. They are in the process of excavating the site and have been for some time.

There is some archaeological evidence that might lend itself to this theory. Plus numerous ancient writings talk about it, so that, in itself adds to the credibility factor.

Some scientists believe that there was a major world-wide catastrophe that occurred about 11,500 years ago. A "planetoid". according to this theory, passed really close to Earth and caused major changes in the magnetic field around the Earth as well as affecting gravity. To be brief, it aused crustal activity, mountains bulging and large pieces of land to sink below the oceans. Maybe Atlantis was lost in that catastrophe

I believe it existed, but I try not to jump to conclusions about its location or what happened to its people. There are to two good locations for it though, and with what they are finding in the Mediterranean and off the coast of Cuba; maybe we will find it with in the next few decades. The only thing stopping it from being found is rather closed minded scientists, and this is coming from some one who is studying forensic science.

there is a good chance that ut does exist but you can never be to sure. it is all in the way you look at it. like if you say it is a fact then howcome they talk of how there are unicorns on the island when we disproved that. OF if you say it is not true then why would someone bring up this idea. For fame yes but at the same time they would fear of someone discovering there secret and that would not be good.

Fiction but based in fact. Sometimes legends and stories exaggerate the truth.

Anything is possible...the earth has had some really cataclysmic changes over time and burying of a whole island could be possible. So far, there isn't enough evidence to suggest either way...only faith.

maybe based on some real civilization, but not word for word or anything like that.

Ready almost anything by Gram Hancock, he makes a great case for the evidence of an advanced lost civilization.
