It was probably a weak hamster, either ill or some type of deformity. Animals do this, for them it's natural..in nature it's all about survival of the fittest.
Remove it from the cage and bury it (so it won't smell)..that is a disgusting sight to have to see

First of all, the sick jokes about humans eating hamsters is disgusting and you should all have your heads checked, I think you are sociopathic.
Also, the average pet store employee does not actually know much about the animals they are selling. Do not necessarily trust their advice. Do some research, please.
What breed of hamster do you have? The most common type of pet hamster is the Syrian (also know as: Golden hamster, teddy bear hamster, black bear hamster, European hamster) These are very territorial and want to be alone in their homes. They will attack an intruder in most cases. NEVER house these animals together. Mother hamsters sometimes eat their babies for a variety of reasons and if a pet hamster is pregnant, a lot of research needs to be done to lessen the chances of this happening.
If you have a type of dwarf hamster (Campbell's Russian, Winter White, Chinese, Roborovski), they can be housed in same-sex pairs or groups provided they have plenty of space and hide outs so they can get away from each other sometimes.
Many animals will kill each other not of out spite or barbarism but rather out of a natural compassionate instinct. This will occur when an animal is weak, sick or undersized.
RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH! I cannot emphasize that enough.

Hamsters sometimes do that to eachother! I've heard of baby hamsters eating their parents heads off! Look online! Females in the same cage should be fine though! Good Luck and remove the dead hamster NOW!

Are you sure that you have two hamster and not something else I have two hamsters and they have been in the same cage every sense I've had them and I don't under stand what happened in your case are you feeding them on a regular basics I just don't understand that and are you telling the truth because I called my pet shop and they told me that you must not have hamsters because that is not normal,so I say to you find out what is in the cage before you buy something to put in the cage with that meat eater you have I really don't think that it's a hamster and of coarse remove it from the remains of the other animal.

I would take it out. Your other hamster could get very sick and plus, pretty soon you'll have maggots. I never heard of a hamster eating an old older one. My hamster ate her babies because I heard her wailing in pain and went to pick up up only to find out she was having babies. I didn't even know she was pregnant since I had just gotten her two days before. But she ate the babies. I had a bunch of baby hamster bodies and no heads. I didn't take them out at first not knowing what to do and I had maggots in a day.

You should definitely remove the victimized hamster. I can't imagine any good that will come out of allowing the surviving pet to continue its cannibalistic behavior.
I guess your options are to bury the dead animal, or put it in a plastic bag, in the trash. You should definitely wear disposable gloves while handling it, if possible. Or, you could use a plastic bag to pick it up, turning the bag inside out, around the hamster, and then tie it up. And, definitely wash your hands well afterward.
Note: Often, once a rodent becomes cannabilistic (killing/eating others of its kind), it will continue in that behavior; so you might not be able to give him/her a companion in the future.

Hamsters, as well as many other rodents, are incredibly territorial. If you want to have more than one, make sure they are the same sex, because if they reproduce, the male will eat the offspring. Also, be sure to give them ample space. What I did was took two of the enclosures and connected them with those climbing tubes. Take the other one out. That is disgusting and it could make the other sick

Take the hamster dead hamster out of the cage. It could cause the other hamster to get sick from whatever disease caused it to die and the cage could smell awful being its exposed to the elements. R.I.P. Hamster

Hamsters are known to turn on one another. Just take the other hamster out and let your other one be solitary.
That's how I avoid problems-- My Russian Dwarf is all by herself.
