I have a small furniture store, and despite the naysayers, I do just find against the giant competitors. Some nice things about furniture are that the unit size is big. You don't have to sell many sofas to break even if you keep your expenses low. Also, if you get some good furniture lines, people will be happy to order and wait for merchandise. They'll leave you a deposit so you don't have to front the money to purchase the order. It's a good type of business that can steadily grow so you don't have to spend all your savings at once. Start small- find an inexpensive line and try out the flea market or something similar. Get a feel for the business and all that it entails and then start looking for a shop.
Do your research and be prepared to work hard. If you are lazy, just put that money in a few mutual funds and let it grow, then get a job working for somebody else.

Think of all your interests & ask yourself if any of those could be expanded into a business. Just keep in mind...what's your expertise? What are your interests? What could you imagine yourself doing?
By researching the prospect of starting your own business -- what it entails, what you need to know, helpful hints, etc -- you'll feel better prepared to take that plunge.
I found some book titles that are relevant to your specific question:
* 101 Internet Businesses You Can Start from Home by Susan Sweeney
* The Best Home Businesses for the 21st Century by Paul Edwards
* Selling Online: How to Become a Successful E-Commerce Merchant by Jim Carroll
* I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was: How to Discover What You Really Want and How to Get It by Barbara Sher
* I Don't Know What I Want, But I Know It's Not This: A Step-by-Step Guide to Finding Gratifying Work by Julie Jansen
* The Best Internet Businesses You Can Start by Marian Betancourt
I also posted some article links in the source box.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Forget it! I lost $400,000 last year in a small busness America has went nuts. Wal-Mart will do you in. If you do not beieve me look around at how many small businesses are for sale. Small businesses are a thing of the past in the states. It also has to do with the customers. Take your money run for congressman, and start passing some laws to protect small businesses/ Good luck, but do some research on what i said and think conservative not optomistic.

I'm gonna be very honest with you: If at the moment I had any good ideas for starting a successful business, I'd be starting the business myself and wouldn't be sharing them with anyone else. Good luck though... Cheers!!!

A good place to start is a franchise because that supplys you a base idea and usually brings in good money. That would give you time to think about an idea of your own while bringing in money.
