I'm looking for companies that pay dividends so that I receive a dividend check each month. Is there a list of such companies?

That is more the function of Bonds. Stock dividends are very small, comparatively.

Any newspaper listing of stocks will show the dividend.

Barron's newspaper shows a lot of technical information.

Here's a list of the dividend yield for the stocks in the Nasdaq 100
http://www.indexarb.com/dividendYieldSortedn1.html

From this same site, you can see that the aggregate dividend yield from the popular indexes:

S&P 500 2.02%

DJIA 2.49%

Nasdaq 100 0.51%

To see the dividend on an individual stock of say, the S&P, go to Yahoo Finance and click on the chart of the S&P 500. Or find the U.S. Indices first, then click on the S&P. Along the left side, click on Components. Then click on each component symbol to see the dividend for that stock.

You also need to find out how long these companies have been paying a dividend.Did they just start paying one last year? Or have they been paying a dividend since 1920?? Usually, the higher the dividend yield, the higher the risk. Make sure their earnings per share are, and will be, greater than the dividend. Go to the Reference Dept.at your library and look at Value Line. It has a page listing the dividend paying stocks in their universe.

Marketwizard got it right. There are a goodly number of high dividend paying stocks. I like Allied Capital andGenco Shipping and Trading. Also, there are many REITS (real estate investment trusts) that pay a hefty dividend. Good luck.
