CNet says the new Creative Zen V or Zen V plus is a much better value than the iPod Nano.

It is small. Has an armband accessory. Has flash memory rather than a hard drive for storing the songs so is less susceptible to shock. It has a more compact form factor. It has more sources to buy music or rent subscription songs.

An iPod is just a type of MP3 player. There are many types of MP3 players, too. Hundreds, thousands of models.

The best deal would be the Creative Zen Nano Plus. It's $55/$65 for one that holds 125/250 songs. It comes packaged with an armband accessory, too.

If she needs a color screen, wait for the Creative Zen V (Plus).
The Plus version has video and FM radio, which the Nano doesn't have, but costs a little more. Either one is a better value than the Nano, says CNET.

Both of these are flash players and the Zen V (Plus) supports subscription services such as Rhapsody to Go and Napster to Go.

It's probably best to go for Mp3 player that uses flash memory (no moving parts) if it is to be used during exercise, it wont be able to hold as many songs as a hard drive version but will hold more than enough for the longest of training sessions.

As for which model that is very much a personal choice but a good guide for what to look for when buying an mp3 player can be found at http://www.infonetjunction.com/mp3players
