I thought it was known as Parking Bay

Technically, the aeroplane's aren't parked on the apron. That's where passengers are loaded and unloaded. The plane is then parked somewhere else.
Apron is a word that means an extended edge -- as in the apron of a stage - that's the part in front of the curtain, that extends towards the orchestra pit. The runway apron is an extended edge -- it gets planes off the runway so other traffic can come and go while the passengers embark and disembark.
I'm not sure how the name apron came to be given to the item women (and some men)wear in the kitchen. Perhaps it was once the bottom edge of their smock, and was enlarged to give a little more protection to their clothing -- but that's just a guess.

probably because it is attached to the taxiway like the skirt of an apron. By the way, it IS called an apron - I was a professional pilot for over 20 years, so I should know!
