I think I can partially ans er:
Socrates was an intelligent and gifted man...he asked questions which many scoffed were stupid since everyone knew the answers to them...but in the end everyone involved in trying to answer the questions he asked discovered that while they believed they had the anuses, they in fact had to admit that they were really ignorant and had no convulsive answers to any of even the simplest of questions....but they learned that discussing questions, they had gained quite a lot of knowledge they didn't have previously...
SO...QUESTIONS ARE AN EXCELLENT WAY TO LEARN AND TO GET INFORMATION WE WOULDN'T HAVE HAD BEFORE

Why not - lawyers do it all the time?
But seriously - one reason would be to find out whether your answer is as good as you might think it is.
Getting input from others is a productive way to reshape your thinking.

To teach someone.
To make someone think.
