That's what I always wanted to know! In some epidsodes they do and some they don't because in the previous epidsode I watched the other day, Peter's house was getting robbed and he went into this safety thing in the attic and eventually he made the sprinklers go off and they were about to drown and Peter said "You know, I didn't like the godfather" (the movie) and Stewie said something about it along with everyone else and they understood him then.

I think it's something like Hobbes from Calvin and Hobbes.
Calvin (and the reader) see him as a living tiger who walks and talks and interacts with Calvin, and while Calvin's parents and other characters acknowledge Hobbes' existence they see him as a stuffed toy.
I see Stewie in the same way... not that he's not real, but that the family does not hear his maniacal ravings about taking over the world and cussing out his mother.
The dog talks... but the other characters talk back. Not so with Stewie. He talks to them, but they don't DIRECTLY respond to him.

Well when they first made the show they did not. However, On th elater edpisodes they can. If you watch the commentary Seth Mcfarlane (shows crator) answers this very question and also explains that Stewie is a homosexual as well.

I think only Brian does. The rest of the family can only tell what mood he's in.

no i think the only one who understands him is Brian.... Everyone else treats him like a baby, and it lets u assume they do when they don't... If they could understand him, i think Lois would know he's trying to kill her....

I don't think so because they are always ignoring him but Brian (the dog) does, I think when he talks they think he's crying.
