There are so many conflicting reports on the web about whether or not poppers (amyl nitrate, butyl nitrate etc brand names include colt, max gold, buzz, tnt etc) are safe to be used as a recreational 'drug', either to heighten sexual pleasure or as something to give you a feeling of euphoria whilst clubbing. For years they have been popular in the gay community and widely available in gay stores/clubs, but more and more do I see them getting used in "straight" clubs.

I know what the effect they have on you is, I'm not looking for an explination of their uses (I know ALL about them!!), I'm looking for info on whether or not they are safe!

I think some people are thinking I mean party poppers, like the things with the streamers...err... no, not exactly!

Oh, and yea, I know they burn ;-)

Poppers are drugs... drugs are toxins... toxins are bad for your health. End of story.

The same applies to "safe" and legal prescription drugs, caffiene, alcohol and tobacco, however. So only you can decide whether it is worth the risk of using poppers for your own health. I'd suggest probably not, but as an adult in a free society, it's up to you.

They damage the immune system. They reduce the ability of blood to carry oxygen. They cause anemia (both Heinz body hemolytic anemia and methemoglobinemia). They damage the lungs. They cause cellular changes. Poppers are strongly mutagenic (that is, they cause genes to mutate), and they have the potential to cause cancer by producing deadly N-nitroso compounds. Poppers can cause serious skin burns and death or brain damage from cardiovascular collapse or stroke.

It depends on how often they are being used. My friends did them for years & they're fine.

Once a week should be fine (just don't keep using all night).

They are far safer than some of the crap you could be taking, so what the heck eh?

:-)
