When i moved in with my other 2 friends we decided as a group that the person with the larger room should pay slightly more money since they we getting more space. We also determined since there was three of us the person that found the space that we all agreed on got 1st choice of bed rooms. Then if & when that person moved out the other 2 would draw straws. It work for us for the 3 years & 3 roomates we went though. We kept a household account & split everything else equally.
hope that helps.

If there is only a slight difference in size of the two rooms then it shouldn't really matter, but if one room is TINY and one room is pretty large compared to the smaller room, i would say it's fair that the larger room pays a *little bit* more in rent since the two rooms are obviously vastly different in living comfort - why would a resident of a small cramped room pay the same as the resident in a large room? Makes no sense. But if you share the same living room, bathroom, kitchen, etc. then it should be pretty even anyways. I'd say to rock paper scissors if neither cares to pay maybe 5-10% more on the larger room - or even if you pay the same amount, rock paper scissors is SO fair.

Both agree on terms, and then flip the coin.
I think the whole bigger room for more money is a bit weird, but by the other answers, it looks like I am in the minority.
Is the difference in size really that much?
Do you earn similar amounts of money?

Measure the rooms and as long as windows are the same in each, pay based on the difference in square footage for each room. Divide the common area by two plus the square footage of each room and make each ammt a percentage. Then see what the difference is.
If both of you want the bigger room, flip a coin.

Create incentives that equalize the whole living experience. Alter the rent for each, add more household duties to one side, or something else that will make the person with the smaller room glad to have it.

I'd do different rent amounts. If you can't agree on that, split the rent 50/50 and do a coin toss.

Well, it all depends on the individual. I would suggest, if its me, and am not earning much compared to my friend, i wud volunteer to take up the smaller room. i dont want to burnt a whole in my pocket! if my friend disagree then, there is no other choice rather to split the rent, provided i get to keep some of my unwanted stuff in his/her room, and he/ she has no complains about it!

I would say the one with the larger room pays a little more. Of course you could always work out other bills/utilities, etc.
