There was a time when they offered people hope for a better future. Now adays all they offer is fear of the future and our neighbors.
There was a day when butchers and pig farmers became mayors and governors. Now we have to be extremely wealthy and well connected.

What will it take for politicians to be admired again?

Once upon a time politicians seemed to do a lot with a little. Now they seem to do a little with a lot. Back in the day there were a few simple taxes that everyone understood and basic government services. Now virtually every human activity is taxed and regulated with government codes that run into the thousands of pages. Isn't it ironic that now the US government is larger than the old Soviet government ever was? And we thought we won!

When they solve problems instead of create them. I'm sorry but Taxes are a problem for many people - hard to pay - and social security is a huge problem - you pay a lot and get back very little. Health care is becomming a problem which is ignored by our government as such (you realize its 1/3rd of our national budget today). We hate politicians because they fail us like the guy in San Diego and the congressman in New Orleans. We despise the fact they ignore our own laws and get away with it like McKinney and Kennedy. We hate the fact they create issues like letting 12 million people come here illegally and then want to look the other way.

For us to admire them - they have to solve problems.

Maybe if they were not all thieves and liars They would be admired again I have not seen any real politicians that I respect since Bill Proxmire left office although I do have to give credit to Russ Feingold at leadst he is making an honest effort to get things back on the right track

The American people would have to wake up and pay attention. Then reward only the behavior we want in politicians. Eventually we would once again have admirable people in government. But Americans are too lazy to do the hard work necessary to elect the right people.

As the saying goes, the People always end up with the government they deserve.

Politicians see people as votes and not as Americans. They don't have our interests at heart, only theirs.
If i see a politician who actually cares then that person will be a person i admire but that won't happen no matter what they say.

Our obsolete, elitist Constitution sanctifies such creatures. Start challenging our Sacred Cows and we'll find a way to create a true democracy.
