Statistics are playdoh. They can be twisted and smooshed into whatever shape a person wants. Most legitimate research will state how many people were asked, how and from where those people were chosen, and the statistic is based on that. Sometimes you'll see it listed as "a representative selection of society".

The fairest selections are randomly done. However, they can be, and often are, biased. You can go into an affluent white community and ask 1,000 people how many cars they own and come up with the statistic, "90% of those surveyed say they own 2 or more cars" and nobody has to know that you only polled people from an affluent white community. Take this same question to the Bronx, on the other hand, and ask 100 people and come up with the statistic, "90% of those surveyed say they have never owned a car." and you don't have to say it's because they all use public transportation.

Family Feud did it right: "100 people surveyed, top 6 answers on the board, here's the question."

the whole point of "statistics" is that you can estimate a large sample from data taken from a smaller sample

the science of statistics include ways of doing this so that your samples are appropriately chosen and appropriately sized

these statistics will have a level of accuracy that can be expressed numerically

for instance, the something percent of the world with brown eyes might have a 99% confidence that it is within plus or minus one percent of that something percent

and of course, they don't have to ask people for much of the information, because they may have access to driver's license records or something like that to get their sample data from
