I played a lot of sports when I was in my teens and due to being thin I would often injure myself. Playing baseball I ran into a lot of school yard fences, sprained my ankles many times, bled playing football games, etc.
I often felt I tried to hard and should hold back on my game and getting injured was taboo.
And, then I thought of Mel Allen's magnificent Yankee, Mickey Mantle. How often did 'the Mick" get hurt and played through his pain and injuries from trying too hard. If we take out the first three letters and the last three letters of Mickey Mantle, we come up with... key man.
And, because of Mickey Mantle, who played center field for the N.Y. Yankees, I was inspired to play through my injures.
The greatest baseball player that ever inspired me was someone who taught me, it's o.k. not be whole or perfect. You can still play. What a little tape and bandage could do to enhance a kid in a Brooklyn school yard who just tried...too dam hard.
Thanks Mick...you were the greatest.

My favorite yankee?
That's an easy one...
anyone who strikes out with the bases loaded, 9th inning, 2 outs, down by 3.

As for current Yankees, I KNOW it should be someone like Jeter or A-Rod, but really, it is Bubba Crosby. I'm not sure why, he's a scrappy guy, he always tries his best. He'll never be HOF, or be in Monument Park, but I like him anyway.
All time it's Lou Gehrig, he was a class act in all ways, a true gentleman sportsman.

Paul O'Neil was the greatest yankee position player during their run of 4 champs in 5 yrs. Mattingly would have been my favorite, if he had won one

Lou gehrig. Because he had what nobody today will ever have...
A heart. Derek Jeter is great but the rest look at paychecks and don't appreciate the smell of fresh cut grass or the sound of a ball hitting a wooden bat.

"The Iron Horse" Lou Gehrig. He was the first baseball player to have his uniform number retired. Career: .340 avg, 493 hr, 1995 rbi, 2,130 consecutive games, Triple Crown winner, only player in history to collect 400 total bases in five seasons, only player to hit 40 doubles and 40 home runs in the same season in 3 different seasons.
Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.
