Mathematically speaking, after the Feller no-hitter, the batting averages did change, from none at all (zero hits in zero at-bats is a meaningless number because you can't divide by zero) to .000 . But baseball statistics have meanings all their own, and conventionally, someone with no at-bats is frequently assigned a batting average of .000 but just as frequently a dash (-) instead of a number. By the same token, a pitcher who has no earned runs and no innings pitched has no ERA, not an ERA of 0.00 . Note that the infinity symbol is assigned to the ERA of pitchers who have given up earned runs but no innings pitched, even fractional ones.
The basic reasoning, however, is sound. If a team's batting average starts at .000 it remains there after a no-hitter.
