But one that doesn't have to have a hose stuck out the window - that is selfcontained?

I wouldn't bother.

I had one in my last office and found them expensive, noisey and ineffective.

The amount of heat that they kick out of the back is incredible. You wouldn't want to sit near it, thats for sure. (Even with an external vent)

Well, my partner bought one last summer when I had my baby n the bedroom was like a greenhouse. All air conditioning units have to expel hot air but the hose on ours has a flat connector that doesn't make the window too far open.

You can set the temperature from anything between 16C - 35C.They work brilliantly, as long as the vent pipe is out of a small gap in the window.Be warned they can be quite noisy when trying to get temperature down.

I think he bought it from Focus for £150ish.It's a life saver in these hot summer nights.

We have the Travis Perkins booklet monthly and they are selling Delonghi air conditioners for £180 remote controlled!!

Ive seen ones that are movable, but still quite big so not really portable. Air conditioners work by removing warm air from a room, much like a fridge. All the warm air has to be vented away so they are usually supplied with a hose to run out of the room to remove the warm air.

The problem with trying to cool anything down, is you need to either use the heat to evaporate something(eg water, think of the cool breeze off the sea!) or pump it somewhere else(like the one you bought). The amazon link I've included lists the water cooled variety. Have you seen the portable/mini fridges, they usually use a heat pump in the back or lid of the unit that pumps heat from the inside(making it cool), to the outside of the fridge, where a heatsink/fan disperses the heat into the surrounding air. The quick methods of getting some relief from the heat are:- Buy one of those compressed air canisters, or buy one of those plant mister pumps to spray a fine mist on your face/arms/body that would give immediate relief(not to be used whilst using anything electric!!).
All the best in keeping cool!

A window unit will keep the room cool with the windows put in. Wal Mart has the GEs and Home Depot. A portable one should work with the screens covered. With just the screens, an ac will be over worked and will not last long.

Air coolers, or, evaporative coolers work on the principal of evaporation.
They work well in dry climates like Arizona, California, and other western states where the humidity is low. Lower humidity evaporates water in a more efficient way than, say, North Carolina.
If you put one of these in a room, soon after you turn it on, the water in the air increases by the evaporation of water in the cooler. As the room humidity increases, the efficiency of the evaporator decreases.
You need to put it in a window to pull in drier air in to effectivly evaporate the water.
If you buy an air conditioner, you would need to put it in a window as well to discharge the heated air outside.

If it doesn't get rid of the heat out of the room, how can it possibly lower the temperature in the room?
