National Parks can be expensive. But if you camp, it becomes far cheaper. You can also save on the economy rooms (e.g. shared showers) At the Grand Canyon, you can get a room for maybe $50. YellowStone Lake Lodge rooms from $70 perhaps (with own shower/bathroom).
But if the point is to get ACTIVE, it gets expensive if you don't do it all yourself - rafting the Colordao through the Grand Canyon is awesome but expensive. Rafting the upper Salt River is cheaper.
