one way is to use "hoofmaker" from the farm supply store. it is for animals. very cheap and goes on clear and greaseless and does not stink.

Mine also have indentations (hollow places or dips, especially pronounced next to the cuticle) across them from time to time, as if there is a nutritional deficit.
