What can we do to get world wide focus on the fundamental needs of society and shed special interests waste?

There are WANTS &. NEEDS in all society. If we focus on the NEEDS and shed the WANTS or special interests or (Pork), we would be able to start producing results and progress throughout the planet. Have a positive effect on ALL of society and not just certain portions or specific areas. Special interest projects take away from society and causes dreaded financial results in the majority of cases, whereas, if we focus on fundamentals and put constraints on wasteful and abusive special interest projects, cut the public funding for special interests, we can then turn those funds into supporting the fundamentals of societies and even rid a large portion of fraud that often occurs in the special interest arena. There are three major causes of special interest power: the graduated income tax, the demise of party power, and open access government laws. Eliminating any of these would push us toward a less special interest oriented government.

The graduated income tax means that few people actually feel the negative impact of government spending (higher taxes), whereas many people feel the benefits of government spending.

Polical parties used to hold together all of the different interests together. Today with political parties in a very weak position single issue groups have filled in the gaps. Now that it is possible to get something passed without partisan support, special interestes are free to pursue whatever they want.

Laws which give people more access to government are only used by the those who feel passionately about a given issue. Thus special interests are the ones who gain access and influence.

I see your point and as a WCM I understand that the cards are stacked against me. I think like so many things though this merely a political pendulum swing and it will go back the other way as well. This has happened so in many cases. Remember how bad nuclear power was after Three Mile? Now there can't be enough good things said about it, Affirmative action also threatened the white male with quotas. This is why the Bill of Rights is so important. Democracy with out hurting the individual. There is no "Men's Studies" yet, because we aren't an oppressed minority.(yet) You are the beginning of the pendulum swing.

who should define which needs are most important?
what should be the basis of an instrument that aims at satisfying those needs? rationality? morals? justice?
which would be an indicator that the needs have been meet?

Some things have already been done. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), are eight concrete goals aimed at reversing the worst aspects of global poverty by 2015.

But those might not be your or my needs.
