America's opitimism was lost on a November day in 1963 with an assasins bullet. The 60's as we know them happened because we had genuinely interested young people who simply didn't want to die.
As a older member of Gen-x, I can say my generation would be more frightened if you took our cable and our Xbox's. Gen-Next and Gen-Me, well it only gets worse after us, and I admit we are pretty bad, pretty lazy.
However, if there was just one person we could get behind, who spoke his/her mind with out paying attention to the polls, who actually cared about the world and did take money from people like Abramoff, we might just get charged. It is difficult to get any emotion going when it is clear no matter what we do, it won't make a difference. Corporations and PAC's control our country.
That said, Goddess, don't let Disco be reborn. And save us from Leisure suits!

What world do you live in? What happened in the 80's, 90's and 00's that makes you think the spirit and optimism are gone? Your listening too much to Sean Penn and Micheal Moore. There are plenty of us out here that think this country is leading the world in a better direction and opportunity for a better life has never been greater.

Having grown up in the 80 s I do believe we where much better then than now. I think all of us that lived in the 80 s being either a teen or a young adult we saw life as much more than social media. We had real friends, we had real conversations, we cherished social encounters, we dared to dream and dream BIG. The music we listened to had meaning and spoke to us, the movies touched us and made us creative. Today we live in an instantaneous life where we have no real friends and our conversations and social interactions are shattered by iphones and facebook. Yes we have advanced in technology but it I think it has done more damage than good when it relates to social issues. I will give up my cell phone all day long to relive the 80 s!

You want the 'Disco freaks' and 'Hippies' life-style ...
1. Legalize Marijuana.
2. Initiate the draft so that people can say , "Screw America"
3. Convince women that if they want equal rights they need to take off their undies and spin it over their heads.
Ooops, you're geriatric, and you'd probably enjoy the following to fit you're aging body:
1. Legalize Viagra, Vioxx, and Cialis.
2. Make fun of solders who are serving in the Iraq conflict ... bag on George W. Bush daily ... and deny any pay raises to veterans who've been injured.
3. Legalize porn on the internet ... hell, the old ladies already took off their bra's and there is $$$ to be made with this on the internet.
Ooops that's where the 'Disco Freaks' and 'Hippies' have taken us, and that's where we are today.

Well, first of all, beware of nostalgia. It's not what it used to be.
But seriously - I doubt anyone can ever "go back." However, I don't think it'd be too difficult to revive American spirit and optimism.
All we'd have to do is find dome honest politicians.
Whoops, did I say it wouldn't be too difficult?

Now that Nixon is dead ANYTHING's possible...
I think a lot of what you describe is the fault of the "major media's"
blame America first mentality. They constantly focus on what's WRONG instead of what's RIGHT with our country.
Other than that I think it's up to each of us to remember that we do more to help the world than ANY other nation on the planet.
