How do I find out how much an old painting is worth?

I am having a hard time figuring out the name on the bottom of the painting...so it's hard to compare to other stuff on ebay.

well there is a guy I know by the name of Wayne Mattox. He does appraisals for antiques. Here's his number 203-263-2899. He can give you an estimate over the phone.
