I have never really read comic stories before, but would really like to start! I don't know what is good and bad in comics, or even what I am looking for or at in the comic book store. I was just wondering how I could get into it, I really want to start picking up comics a lot more and reading them, but I just don't know how or what I am doing...I hope this doesn't sound to stupid, but I don't want to jump into anything without knowing a little something about it. How do I find out about story lines happening already? I picked up a Wizard Mag subscription to hopefully give me some more insight. Can anyone help with this wierd and mondain question, thanks a lot!

Picking up a graphic novel or a trade paper back (which collects a set storyline, usually, is a good way to start) of a certain comic book. They'll usually gloss over what happened previously and it's a good, cheap way to start.

You can find cheap ones at any comic convention or comic book stores, or if you don't want to spend the hard-earned cash, then more and more public libraries are picking up graphic novels and TPB's nowadays.

Check online too. Wikipedia.org is a good 'encyclopedia'-type resource that usually gives an up-to-date synopsis on characters, storylines of pop culture.

Hope that helps!

First of all Wizard is a monthly love letter to Marvel comics. It contains a lot of factual information, but the more opinionated stuff, take with a grain of salt. Secondly, pick up some graphic novels or trade paperbacks that contain complete stories to get a taste of what kind of writing you enjoy. I would recommend anything written by Alan Moore, Geoff Johns, Mark Waid, Kurt Busiek, and Peter David. Then it's just a question of being informed as to what comes out when and selling your blood to pay for it all. Comics are an expensive hobby/habit. But well worth your while.

Take it as a story, when you pick up one. If it appeals to you ie. sparks you interest then you have found a title you can read/collect regularly.

What I used to do would be to buy back issues from a comic shop going back chronologically to build up a history and get a feel and flavor of the characters....

But this can only begin if the title in particulars hits a chord in you. sometimes the art style would put me off, but if i liked the idea of the storyline or a character I would continue, bcos don't forget art styles change as pencilers & inkers come & go.

HAPPY READING!

I think you should just pick up a comic that you like and start reading it. If you want to know the history, go on the internet and find out the history. I think you should narrow down what you like and focus on that specific comic. It sounds fun, enjoy yourself, do'nt take it too seriously...

I grew up with comics. But most of the things that I grew up with are for girls lol. Like someone else mentioned, I would pick out a comic that you like and read it. If you like it, then you should continue, if you don't then you should move on to one that you do.
