I don't understand how their comment about themselves "makes me feel like the ugly duckling". They are speaking of themselves. When an attractive person says that one of two things is taking place; either they are trying to be humble (and failing) or they have a very poor self-image.

I am told that I am attractive all the time, except for my weight, and I hate the way I look. I always have. I used to write up a list of cosmetic surgery procedures I wanted to have done.

Yes. I don't think I know anyone who likes 100% of what they see in the mirror. You will always find a flaw in your appearance that no one else notices no matter how beautiful others say you are. You always think you know better and that they are just being kind.

Burst their bubble and tell them that they are the ugliest person you've ever met both inside and out. And the next time you see them, hand over a paper bag and tell them they'll need it.

Yup.
They want compliments.
Tell them that they're ugly next time.
And stop feeling bad about yourself.

Yeah, they are fishing for compliments. Next time agree with them and see how they react. :)
