Compressor or freon leak somewhere in the system

Start with the simple, no cost items first. Do you hear the doors moving in the dash when you change the heater controls to cold? Is the A/C fuse blown?

Turn the A/C on high and leave the doors open, look under the hood at the compressor clutch and see if it is spinning. The compressor is round, aluminum (silver) and runs off the belt with two pipes attached to it and maybe two small wires will be visible. The face of the compressor does not turn when the A/C is off and should when it is on. The Internet could help you get a visual.

If it is not, have the system checked for charge and leaks. a 1996 vehicle may very well have a leak or failed component.

There are several reasons for this problem. Most common:
Either the compressor pump is not running or you don't have enough refrigerent in the system. Check for a blown fuse first. That would keep the pump from coming on. If the pump comes on when you turn on the air conditioner (the engine should slow down momentarily when this happens). If this is happening then most likely the problem is a low refrigerant charge.
I see someone suggested a thermostat problem which is unlikely. You should not get confused by thinking this may be the thermostat in the engine cooling system. It would be a different one.

one of three things: you are out of freon, the a/c condenser is not working or the belt is loose around the condenser. If you have never added freon, I would bet on the first. There is a little hour glass in the top of the cannister if you start your engine and look into hour glass and see bubbles or liquid moving around you are low on freon

purely call a repairman and ask for a quote. If the restoration is less costly, then get it restoration and restoration. If no longer bypass and purchase a clean air-conditioner. It possibly simply by no longer adequate air con gasoline.
