The larger cats are smarter according to an article I read in Cat Fancy and from my experience I would agree. That would include Maine Coons, Siamese, Burmese and just large domestic shorthairs. I have had my best experience adopting a cat that is one or two years old that has already been neutered and declawed. Not only do you save a fortune on surgery, but you also don't have to train the cat and the personality is set so you know what you are getting. I have gotten cats like that from the pound and once by emailing everyone I knew and asking if they knew of a cat that fit the description. I got a number of replies and adopted a fabulous cat that way.

A shelter cat is the best "breed".
There are just too many cats in the world. Why would you want to pay hundreds of dollars when you can just get a loveable cat from the shelter!

mathgirl826 is exactly right so give her the 10 points!!!!!
I have four very loving cats. One was abandoned the other 3 are from the shelters.
Everyone wants kittens, and they are cute little boogers, but adult cats make very very very good pets. Give and adult cat a chance!

I have a Maine Coon cat, and she's wonderful. She's a calico - orange, black, and white. Her face is like a yin-yang - half orange and half black, with white in between. She's an awesome cat - very loving, with a great personality, and she's also a great mouser, which comes in handy when you live in the country like I do. Oh, and her name is Harley. :)
