when my iguana is sleeping or sitting around doing nothing in its cage or just lounging around on a window sill my iguana starts getting dark spots on the scales of its head. When i am holding him or interacting with him the dark spots go away and return to a normal green color. Homer is only about 6 months old. Has anybody seen this before or have an explanation of why this is?

they (as well as several other lizards) can change color from brown to green quite often. My guess is it is either in response to mood or as a means of thermoregulation. Darker colors soak up more heat. check out http://www.anapsid.org/iguana/skincolor.html

Go on-line to Mellissa Kaplan. She has a great site for information on health and caring for iguanas. There are many links to other vet sites to help you out.
