Marketing is basically the process of bring an idea to life. It involves a number of functions grouped into something well call the 4 P's:

1) Product--what you're selling
2) Place--where you sell it
3) Promotion--how you'll promote / advertise it
4) Price--how much you'll sell it for

FYI, to most people, marketing is views as being advertising, but as you can see from the above list, adveritising is just one facet of marketing.

The definition of Marketing goes as "Marketing Is a Managment Process that Identify, anticipate and Satisfy customer needs at a profit in a socially exceptable Manner" (This is according to Charted institute of Markeing - UK)

marketing activities are all those associated with identifying the particular wants and needs of a target market of customers, and then going about satisfying those customers better than the competitors. This involves doing market research on customers, analyzing their needs, and then making strategic decisions about product design, pricing, promotion and distribution.
