I am proud to be Native Indian and I love my heritage and traditions, though I may not practice it, I do know about it, etc.
The draw back is the stereotyping that goes on - everyone thinks Natives are on welfare, drunks, lazy, always wanting handouts, etc. I can say for myself and my 7 sisters, we all work full-time jobs as do our spouses and we very rarely drink and if one of us was on commodities, etc, it was only for a short time.
Also for the Native that grew up on Reservations, when and if they try to move off the reservation for jobs or for college - it's a major culture shock because then they're just like every other person out there trying to get by. On reservations, Natives do get preferential treatment and they get used to it - but it doesn't work in the "REAL" world.
Just my 2 cents. I love being Native Indian and wouldn't change a thing! :-)

Interesting question. Do you mean the original native American Indian that we just about wiped off the planet. Or a born in this country American? I'm of French- Canadian decent but born in America. I always tell people I'm a native American I was born here as were my parents so I have no problem saying I'm a native American. I put it on job applications, and when people ask me what tribe I'm from I say American.

I am a native American and glad. However, I do not think it really matters as long as you love America and respect yourself and others who are RATIONAL, HARMLESS AND LAW ABIDING.
