Go to www.godaddy.com. It costs $8.95 a year. The longer period you buy it for, the cheaper per year it is. As long as the domain name is not taken, you can buy it.

As far as pitfalls, that really depends on what you are trying to do with the domain name(s) that you buy. If you plan on getting them for personal use, there really are not any pitfalls that I can think of other than the copyright issue (what I mean is, the domain name that you get is similar to some names that have already been copyrighted). If you want to tell them, then the problem is, there is no guaranttee of how well your domain names are going to sell. I have quite a few domain names and I thought they are going to sell good but nope, I am still stuck with them.

Some of the domain names that I own are www.beautifulwoman.ws, www.IrresistableDesire.com, and www.hotlips4u.com. All these domain names can both be used commercially and personally. Imagine that you are in a party scene, when you ask a lady for her phone number, she just tells you to come to her personal site at www.hotlips4u.com. What a lasting impression she is going to leave on you. And I am sure you will never forget her. Oh well, guess what? I am still stuck with these domain names. Maybe I can develop some dating sites using these domain names on my own someday.

prices depend on where you get domain names from

godaddy.com offers domains for reasonable prices

the only pitfall is that they only offer a domain name; it is useless unless you have a webhost with the ability to park domain names
