Perhaps they have no concept of water and may not know how dangerous it is to them. It is why they were defeated and left the planet, which is suggested at the end of the film. And it could be curiosity. They found life on another planet (ours). I mean, we go out in space, landed on the moon, knowing that we cannot breathe without oxygen, we invent machines to help us fly, even though we crashed over and over again, or go underwater. So perhaps the risk of invading a water base planet is just the alien way of investigating the unknown. I know we have read of body snatching aliens doing experiments on humans. We would do the same if we caught an alien or discover life on another planet. We are always taking "samples". We have zoos, so I assume they do too.

That is a very good point. It seems extremely unlikely that the alien race would have come to conquer a land rich in water and inhabited by water-based beings. They did have great technology and that should've shown them that the planet and its people would not be compatible. Then again, when stupid aliens want to attack a planet and kill everyone, they probably don't think logically. They just make a bunch of lame clicking sounds and show up at kids' birthday parties.

Well, they never actually touched water, so they didn't know that it was poisonous, and they were invading Earth for its invaluable resources.

Great movie, by the way. Probably in my top 20.

That's why the guy who ran over Mel Gibson's wife went near the water.... because the aliens were invading all inland spots.

exactly why I thought the movie was stupid in the first place. And anyway, the atmosphere always has some level of moisture, called humidity, and it doesn't make sense that the aliens would be able to handle that and not water.

They were harvesting people, obviously they needed the food/fuel...whatever. That was the point of the crop circles, to coordinate an attack away from water but still get what they needed.

That's why they only attacked places that were not close to water..

maybe it's the resources. who knows. greed compels people to do stupid things. why would aliens be an exception?
