Yours is one of the best questions I've heard in a long time. You need to give yourself 10 points for "Best Question", if there were such a category. It saddens me in a way that your question reminds me of what my now deceased father said years ago when he said to me, "Yall's is the 'me first' " generation. You don't know how to think about anybody else without thinking of yourself first." He went on about it, and I hated to hear it, especially since I was in the counseling business and promoted the "me first" mentality since the 1970's. I wish now I could go back to all my clients and give them a full refund for all the money they spent with me when I promoted such a mentality, but I never made enough money to do so. In a way, the "me first" thinking is very good in that it requires that you blame yourself first and you assume your own responsibility for your words and actions first, and quit blaming others, but so many people abused that, primarily the advertisers you saw on television who sold their shampoo, for example, with the slogan, "L'Oreal. . .because I'm worth it." But they knew what to do because they saw the gluttony in us humans. And that gluttony is true whether it's human beings at large or these supposedly "disenfranchised" groups or "minority" groups, or any segment of our population who wants to get their share of the goodies first. And it's true of populations other than American as well, whether it be Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, etc., etc., etc.. Well, I guess I can shut up now since it seems to me I've made my point and don't want to just rattle on. Give yourself 10 points, or 20 for that matter. You asked one of the most insightful, and intelligent questions I've seen in a long time. Good to hear from you. God Bless you.

Human culture is remarkably versatile and allows us to adapt to just about any different kind of environment. However, it's also quite good at differentiating 'ourselves' from 'others.' That is, we are especially good at drawing distinctions based on various characteristics and separating ourselves off into groups.
Ultimately we will find this leftover tendency from our days of roaming the savannah is useless and destructive in a world where people of every different physical appearance, set of religious beliefs, age, sexual orientation, and linguistic background mingle.
Ultimately we're going to have to stop identifying ourselves based on 'difference,' and come to terms with the remarkable similarities between all humans. Only once we come together as one humanity will there be an end to violence and hatred.

I think we as a people should get under ourselves and finger out whats down there pushing us over ourselves,,,as Lennon said... 'you say you want to fix the Constitution, you better first fix your mind instead'
My favorite group is the Girl Scouts...who else will deliver wonderful cookies to your door? ...and to those who say we should ban gay Boy Scouts, I say fine, let them join the Girl Scouts...they share the same common interests and would love to deliver cookies too. I like the ones with the chocolate and the coconut...and how about you?

There is a very 'me first' society in operation at present. No one cares for another in any deep fashion. When we get over ourselves, we get over our differences and can seek our similarities to live in peace.

ABSOLUTELY!!! Once we do manage that -- we'll eliminate pride and selfishness, hatred and greed, which in turn would put an end to wars and conflicts. And if we add charity and love to ourselves and focus on it more we'll eliminate poverty and suffering, and finally have a more peaceful planet

No, because as we strive for more we create better technology and stronger societies. Without that drive for give me more, more more... we'd still be living in the caves.

Mary has it right, if we quit taking our own selves so seriously we'd become more self-less, the opposite of self-ish.
p.s. a good question, thanks for asking.
