I live in Denver Colorado. There are over 30,000 realtors here and over 500 real estate firms. Does Hilltop Realty stand out?

The naming of your business could be one of the most important decisions you will make. A name's originality and legal availability will create a real asset value of its own, as it becomes marketed and gains market acceptance.

The name you choose will become the focal point of all the benefits and features that relate to your business. Customers will be able to find and refer others to it in the future.

I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I'd try them out first.

Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending & registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files.

There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I'm not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You'll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for "free domain name search" and "national yellowpages" and the appropriate links will pop up.

What do you want out of your real estate business, as I presume you're a licensed broker since you're concerned about a name?

Branding is over-rated!

Realtors-Brokers who market their faces, not their specialization, simply compete with every other picture plastered on signs, biz cards, billboards, websites, etc.

For one quick second, put yourself in the shoes of a potential customer, i.e. buyer of seller.

What would you want in a realtor or brokerage office?

Are you interested in the "look" of the person providing real estate services?

Are you interested in the "name" of the company providing real estate services?

Now that *you* have answered these two questions, quickly go to ten, twenty, fifty different people of different ages and socioeconomic condition.

Ask them the same two questions.

What is the result? Perhaps you will have a better idea of the answer to your own question.

I have a real estate license. However, I do *NOT* have biz cards or even one of my pictures floating around.

And I am considered extremely successful in real estate.

Instead, I identified a need and have fulfilled that need. I'm a niche marketer providing licensed real estate services.

And I do it really well.

More than $200,000 per year.

It's not the company *name* that's important, it's the value and need provided by the authority figure at the company.

You see, people with "pain" want to get "pain relief."

You can be their pain relief, earning gratification and huge paydays.

Others may vehemently disagree with me, and that's fine. I'm speaking from experience, not from the marketing school textbook.

I espouse what works for me in real estate. And I'm ecstatic that so many real estate people enter this business with their "to-do" list: glamor photos; biz cards with glamor photo; new wardrobe, new BMW; new Blackberry; new briefcase, etc.

Are you getting my point?

What ever you do, keep this one critical point in mind ---- business success is NOT about YOU. It's about your customers and the value you provide them.

Find your niche. Position and market yourself as an expert/authority in your niche.

You will succeed while providing superior service.

The glamor photo, the BMW, the Blackberry, etc are about the real estate person, not the customer.

What's in a name?

Spend your time researching a niche and marketing yourself as the authority/expert in that niche.

Market the heck out of your own website, giving away lots of valuable and FR_EE information.

Create an opt-in list of buyers and sellers wanting more "expert" information from you.

The name does NOT matter. The value you create is what matters.

The name is simple and easy enough for people to remember. Whether it will stand out depend on how you market your Name/Brand to the right group or niche.
