Some say it's happening right now. Freedom and liberty are being traded for equality and security. Without freedom and liberty, the future looks quite bleak in the US.

There is no heir apparent. Europe is too socialist, China is too Communist. Neither of those has ever worked before, and for good reason. Maybe India will do it.

S. hasn't were given an concepts-blowing impression on the international like it has on the on the spot, the U. ummm first who said US was an Empire?? we show no signs of being an Empire... outside of the fact that we took this land from the Natives that is... but to all of the "Known World" these 2 continents were fair game, unclaimed land if you will... Native Americans did not exactly claim the land as theirs to my knowledge, more along the lines of thanked the spirits or gods or whatever they believed in for what the land they lived on... all the land the United States owns has been legally aquired from other countries, we did not force any governments off our land except for the British (they had an empire) ... now by demise do you mean the total obliteration of the US or do you mean like becoming like Russia or the UK?? all known empires still exist as some form or another in the way of countries, Egypt, Italy, Turkey, France, even little old Macedonia still exists.... right now though... if you believe in the teaching of the Bible specifically the book of Revelations, the US will probably exist till the end of time... err wrong... i mean till Armageddon when 4 superpowers will do something or another... and cause something to happen... dont look at me i havent read the bible in..... i forget how long... but you get the point, now you just have to look at other potential superpowers... China perhaps?? or maybe we've already lead up to it when we nuked Hiroshima.... how many countries have Nuclear technology now?? Thank you God for Plutonium and Uranium and the brains to use it on other people, excuse me while i go make a 3 foot thick solid lead bombshelter...

Unites States is not really an empire. Empires usually consist of several nations united under a single government. The Nations do not really get along and when the central government weakens the empire falls apart and each nation get their own country.
This happened to Roman Empire, this happened to Soviet Union.
United States however have a single nation living on its territory. So there is not as much tension. So even if United States will weaken significantly, loose its grip on the world it will probably not break apart.

The checks and balances of democracy are what were lacking in the great empires that depended on rulers who eventually degenerated to corrupt and decaying governance. It will take a long time to see the demise of the US if we continue to be a bully and not educating future generation in humanistic values.

To your follow on questions,
A: to slow down the inevitable, US should
1. change its behavior on the world scene, be less a bully, but more a leader in facilitating solutions that the world community can resolve their own conflicts.
2. create an environment to not only to educate current and future generation in humanistic values, but also enforce compliance to these values, and
3. improve the effectiveness of its military investment on being defensive, and offensive only as the last resort.

As for the next super power, there is none on the scale of the US anytime soon despite the perception of emerging China. They have so many massive domestic problems that most people not living in China can easily understand.

First of all, that's where you should think. All great empires are ruled by one person, with so many to rule. Their demise is because all those rulers didn't rule the way the people wanted him or her to rule and therefor the empire breaks down.
While we are a nation ruled by the people, of the people and from the people. We care about our citizen not our selves.

It is way overdue already! Your own people should rise up against bush and his corrupt administration. If I saw that happen on the news... I would fly over (I'm English) and join you all; in your fight.

Some empires have lasted for a thousand years. It would have to be some other worldly visitor, or a major catastrophe that would crush the U.S.
