I'm an Astrophysicist trying to switch more into engineering because that's what I've really enjoyed on my previous assignment.. However, once I got my MS I haven't been able to find a job and it's been almost 2 yrs. In some places I was told straight out that they want only men to work there.. What gives? Why do we still have to deal with prejudice these days when everyone else is seemingly progressing past such stupidity?!!! All schools are encouraging women to go into sciences and engineering, but when you get out in the working world you don't get a chance to show what you're capable of...

Because the men who work in those fields can't get dates. So it's really more for your protection.

The fifty one%'s sort of peculiar to me. . . some disciplines look like that, yet i understand of a number of that very a lot are not at any college i'm sufficiently acquainted with. ok, although -- cool if so. EE's frequently notorious for having that one woman contained in the dep., in my journey. That seems to bypass heavily with CompE and CompSci, so i ought to likely aspect to regardless of's happening there because the criminal. i do not do not ignore that that is a lot a "geek" element on the grounds that all styles of engneering majors are extremely geeky to the conventional international. . . yet that must be a minimum of one aspect. so a procedures as my personal EE turn-off, i understand i'd not be stuck useless there because i do not detect a collection of partial derivates almost as wonderful as what I do all day. I were given A's in each and everything by potential of differential equations, yet that does no longer mean i recognize each and each and every of the mathematics i'm able to do. CompSci majors the position I did my undergrad were notorious for showering possibly once a week and did no longer have many instructions in the previous about 11 on the grounds that no individual were given up that early, although. (Yeah, it became a heavily technological know-how/engineering college. . . you ought to spoil out with that.) possibly that is no longer how females favor to stay.

I am an engineer and yes there are fewer women in the field, but I really dont think women are treated like that as a rule. Most women in this field get lots of attention and do well.

If you feel that way, you maybe overcompensating being too forceful or giving out a message of you would be hard to work with.

But I am sorry that you have been done that way.

It's getting better. My nephew's wife is a mechanical engineer who just graduated from University of Arizona and has an amazing job at Raytheon here in Tucson. My nephew also works for Raytheon as an aeronautical engineer. My daughter plans to go into engineering too.

Come to England!

We let anyone in here although we tend to specialize in murderers, rapists and general all round lazy b***ards. I'm not sure though, if we'd stoop as low as female engineers! Woah there! only kidding!!

Over the years, I've worked with quite a few female engineers and I can honestly say, one of them was nearly average (kidding again).

Seriously though, I think it's very unfair and I wish you all the best with your ambitions.

Andy.

If you were denied employment because of your gender, then that company broke the law.

Federal Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Laws
I. What Are the Federal Laws Prohibiting Job Discrimination?
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin;
the Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA), which protects men and women who perform substantially equal work in the same establishment from sex-based wage discrimination;
the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), which protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older;
Title I and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), which prohibit employment discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in the private sector, and in state and local governments;
Sections 501 and 505 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibit discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities who work in the federal government; and
the Civil Rights Act of 1991, which, among other things, provides monetary damages in cases of intentional employment discrimination.

Look for a company that embraces diversity - gender, race, national origin, religion. Don't accept discrimination!

Perservere! Keep at it. Men have always been threatened by intelligent women in any field. Don't give in to the neaderthal mentality. It's an unfortunate fact that we have to work harder to prove ourselves. Go get 'em girl!!!

I don't believe you. (I am assuming you are in the United States.) Many companies in the U.S. have a hard time finding good engineers with the desired skills. And, they absolutely pander to good engineers who happen to be women or minorities.

If someone told you they will not hire you because you are a woman, sue them.
