Why are women shunned off in sciences and engineering?

I'm an Astrophysicist trying to switch more into engineering because that's what I've really enjoyed on my previous assignment.. However, once I got my MS I haven't been able to find a job and it's been almost 2 yrs. In some places I was told straight out that they want only men to work there.. What gives? Why do we still have to deal with prejudice these days when everyone else is seemingly progressing past such stupidity?!!! All schools are encouraging women to go into sciences and engineering, but when you get out in the working world you don't get a chance to show what you're capable of...

I am an engineer and yes there are fewer women in the field, but I really dont think women are treated like that as a rule. Most women in this field get lots of attention and do well.

If you feel that way, you maybe overcompensating being too forceful or giving out a message of you would be hard to work with.

But I am sorry that you have been done that way.

It's getting better. My nephew's wife is a mechanical engineer who just graduated from University of Arizona and has an amazing job at Raytheon here in Tucson. My nephew also works for Raytheon as an aeronautical engineer. My daughter plans to go into engineering too.

We let anyone in here although we tend to specialize in murderers, rapists and general all round lazy b***ards. I'm not sure though, if we'd stoop as low as female engineers! Woah there! only kidding!!

Over the years, I've worked with quite a few female engineers and I can honestly say, one of them was nearly average (kidding again).

Seriously though, I think it's very unfair and I wish you all the best with your ambitions.

If you were denied employment because of your gender, then that company broke the law.

Perservere! Keep at it. Men have always been threatened by intelligent women in any field. Don't give in to the neaderthal mentality. It's an unfortunate fact that we have to work harder to prove ourselves. Go get 'em girl!!!

I don't believe you. (I am assuming you are in the United States.) Many companies in the U.S. have a hard time finding good engineers with the desired skills. And, they absolutely pander to good engineers who happen to be women or minorities.
