That is a misconception. I'm a liberal Democrat and have no problem with you bearing arms. I think owning a gun for protection is a good idea. I have no problem with persons having guns for hunting purposes either. I do, however, have problems with some of the slack laws of some states. There are certain types of guns that an untrained civilian should not have in their possession. Some states don't have restrictions on these guns. I also believe there should be some sort of waiting period. Not all states have these. I've heard arguments both for and against waiting periods and I have to go with those for waiting periods. Most people who need guns for hunting or want them for protection don't need them the same day. I am not trying to downplay the need for personal protection at all, but there are other alternatives to a gun (self defense items such as stun guns, pepper spray, stun batons, alarms, etc.) that a person can protect themselves with during the waiting period before they get their firearm.

I don't own a gun, but I have plenty of friends that have them and it is a possibility that I would purchase one for my own protection in the future. All of my friends that own guns are responsible and trained to use them. I also know others who own guns that have no idea what they are doing. I'm sure you would agree that not all people are responsible. Although I respect their right to own them, I would not want to be around them while they are holding them. That is my right. If I ever purchased a firearm, I would make sure I knew how to use it properly and kept it in the safest place possible.

Doesn't Vermont, which is a mostly Democrat state have a right to carry law on the books? You shouldn't lump all the Democrats together like that, but I know what you mean. An individiual right to bear arms translates to power for the individual, while leftists want all power to reside in the hands of big government. Crime is very low in rural areas where everybody is armed because crooks don't like getting shot. Apparently that doesn't work in cities though, so maybe they're trying to make everyone conform to the same standard. I'm sure the founding fathers would be apalled by all the hoops law-abiding citizens have to jump through just to own and carry a firearm. If I told you "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,, go take out the trash." What would you take from that? You'd go take out the trash right? The first part of the sentence does not modify the second. "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." seems pretty straight-forward to me.

Well, let's break this down, shall we?

1. I am a Democrat
2. I've never told you that you can't own a gun
3. I greatly dislike the NRA. I think they are thugs
4. The Constitution, in it's literal reading, says that the right to bear arms belongs to CITIZENS OF THE STATE MILITIA
5. I'm betting you are not a citizen of the state militia, considering that no state in the Union has a state militia.
6. I own a gun
7. I know how to use that gun
8. I believe in conceal & carry
9. I don't believe that gun ownership is a constitutional right. I believe the right to feel safe is a HUMAN right.
10. I don't like that you've made general assumptions on a topic that you have obviously not researched before asking your question.

How's that?

Hey I'm not a Democrat but am a liberal and personally I don't know anyone that is opposed to your right to bare arms.

I know demo's all over America that are gun owners none of them are out to abolish the 2nd amendment.

My guess is a small minority of people that live in the biggest city's have suffered because of gun related crime. Sad as it is a few thousand people get shot every year. It's the mothers of these people that lost their lives that speak out about guns. Hey and this is what moms do when their son gets shot. Is it the voice of the Democratic party? No it's just a few women that lost a loved one.

I say be compassionate with those that suffer loss; but keep my right to own and use thermo nuclear weapons. I want to see shoulder fire neutron rockets on the market. Something that will take out the enemy.

I'm not really answering your question but it bothers me a bit when people use specious facts to support their claims. Luann E said no states have militias but... she's wrong. Virginia, Texas and New Hampshire all have state militias. 25 states, including P.R. also have a National Guard which follows the Army regulations but they're under the control of the -Governer-, are paid with state funds and generally don't leave the state they signed up in. I say generally because the Texas National Guard was dispatched by the -Governer- during Hurricane Katrina. The national guard -is- a state militia despite the fact that they have to follow the federal military regulations.

You are generally mistaken. I personally will never touch a gun, but I support your right to carry a gun. However, I don't think you should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon in public, and I don't see the need for individuals to own multi-fire weapons. I don't see that hunting deer requires an AK-47.

But hand-guns and rifles - go for it. Just use it wisely and safely, and hopefully never against another human unless absolutely necessary.

If you think only Republicans are NRA members you are ignorant of the politics around your question. It could be the Democrats you are talking to know you personally and have decide you don't need a gun, but it's OK for the rest of us.

You have fallen for right wing propaganda. I am as far left as a liberal can get and I FULLY support your American constitutional right to bear arms.

Why? Because, like you said, it is your guaranteed liberty written into the constitution!

no you are COMPLETELY right. Asking a democrat a question that makes sense is way too difficult for them to answer.
