Get a picture of Bush and Bill Clinton in the sac together. You will become a household name in 1 day.

Good Luck.

Take some good photos and ask local business like restaurant etc to display them with your name and the cost of the photos. Also you could have an exhibition either on your own or sometimes with others if there is something going on in your area.
Putting an advert in Yellow Pages always gets some results, this is expensive but people first of all have to know that you exist.
Do you have a local paper that will do an article on you, as free advertising is always the best.
Local shows, pay for a stand for the day or better still the big shows that last for three days, that will bring in people from all areas who will at east take your business cards.
Sometimes people take cards and don't get back for months, but one day you will get a call out of the blue.
Really it is all a matter of letting people know that you exist, you start small and grow.
Eventually you will be able to open your own studio and your future will be secure.
If you want to do weddings, that is always lucrative, then get involved in wedding fares and get a stall at some of these places.
Photographing racehorses is VERY lucrative too send business cards out with a photo you have taken with a racehorse on. You get the picture, let people know that you exist, then look up areas where you might be needed and home in on them.
Also undercut the established photographers to start with, as you get more well known you can raise your prices them.
You can always charge more for those who can afford to pay and less for those who don't have so much money, as even a small job with less money is better than a day without any income.
Hope that this is helpful.
All the best in your career.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Photographers Market Guide to Building Your Photography Business: Everything you need to know to run a successful photography business by Vik Orenstein
* Legal Handbook for Photographers: The Rights and Liabilities of Making Images Paperback by Bert P. Krages
* How to Start a Home-Based Photography Business, 4th Paperback by Kenn Oberrecht
* Shooting & Selling Your Photos: The Complete Guide to Making Money With Your Photography by Jim Zuckerman

I also posted links to some free articles in the source box.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Some suggestions:

Check you local sunday paper in the entertainment section. Along with "Shows", "Auditions", "stage" there should be a category "Call for Entries" - those could be locally sponsored art shows.

Check out local coffee shops or theatre groups - they often have artwork hanging by a "Featured Artist" wich changes on a regular basis.

Get a part-time job at a mall photo store - you'll get experience and you'll be connected to the right people.

Offer to do a wedding or other event free for friends, then you can work from the referrals

Good Luck!!

You could try entering some of your photographs in a local fair.
Rent booth space at a local street festival and display your work, charge reasonable prices, then as you sell more you can charge more. That is also a good way to see what type of photography you are best at by what people are buying

First, you get a camera.
Second, you take a bunch of photographs.
Third, you showcase your work somewhere. A gallery, a coffee shop, your house.
Fourth, if you are good enough people will buy your work, call you, employ you.
