I am interested to know how you view people who speak Afrikaans. Have you ever met them and do you know their culture? Dit sal my eindelose genot gee om die antwoorde te sien....

I once met a professor Greek and Latin from the university of Namibia. He gave a presentation of the defending of Socrates, in Afrikaans. He came to Belgium to do that. I live in Belgium and I speak Dutch. I was able to understand him without any problems. He was able to understand me without any problems. Dutch and Afrikaans are very alike! For example. Your sentence:
Dit sal my eindelose genot gee om die antwoorde te sien...
is in Dutch:
Dit zal mij eindeloos genot geven om de antwoorden te zien...
So as you can see; nearly no difference!
In general, as a Dutch speaking guy, i find it funny, the way Afrikaans sounds. The double negation in Afrikaans is hilarious when you hear it!
Groetjes!

I met a man from South Africa, but he spoke English. I have no informed opinion on Afrikaaners nor their culture. Afrikaans is some sort of mix of Dutch and something else, right?

I've only ever met one.
I met him in a club that I was at with a white girl. He continuously tried to pick up my friend and made a real annoyance of himself. He berated me and called me "kaffir" and other choice things. Unfortunately for him I was adopted by Dutch people and understood most of what he was saying.
After about two hours of this I had enough and decided to leave. He followed me out of the club. To make a long story short, the next time I went back to that club I was told that the police had been by the club looking for information pertaining to a South African that was at the club and was currently in Intensive Care at the hospital.

I have an online pen pal from Cote D'Ivoire, West Africa, and I LOVE his African accent! It's sexy! And of course, I've always been fascinated with Africa. Someday, I'd like to go there.
