You don,t specify if it,s an intake or exhaust manifold. If it is an exhaust manifold it is fairly common for rust to erode the surface and cause a leak in which case you can try having it planed down at a machine shop to create a better sealing surface. If it is an intake manifold a thorough cleaning and light sanding of the surface is usually enough to seal but in some cases you may want to apply some 'Permatex' sealant to any area that may have pits in it.Good luck.

Which manifold are you talking about? If it's the exhaust, and the manifold is cast iron and the head is cast iron, you will want to take the gasket completely off, clean both surfaces absolutely polished, then bolt them up, you won't ever have a leak again. Good luck.
