All life has purpose or it would not exist. Some forms of life do represent hazards and in certain circumstances would have to be controlled. Compassion for life would require me to not step on either.

No i would not step on a butterfly as I would a roach. But not because the butterfly is pretty, because the butterfly is not in my pantry scurrying all over my food. Roaches can be a serious health issue. They will crawl over dog poo, dead animals then into your house. I think at first glance attractive ppl might have an advantage but once you get to know this "beautiful" person if they are mean or lazy or not too smart they won't be well liked. And they certainly will not be well tolerated in a real work place.

I like your question! It makes me think of this episode I watched of Extreme Animals on the Animal Planet station.

They said that roaches from Madagascar can survive up to 300 times more toxic radiation than a human. Scientists proved this in a study and after the experiment was over, they decided to make waste of the bugs by poisoning them and depositing them in plastic bags.

It didn't work.

The roaches shrugged off the poison and literally CHEWED their way out of the plastic bags, only to run wild in this U.S. neighborhood near the testing facility.

As gross as roaches are, they are survivors. No butterfly, as beautiful as it may be, can ever be that strong. In this way, I think a person's intelligence and endurance should have a higher value than exterior beauty.

Good point. This shows how much the eye influences the mind. I wouldn't step on a butterfly, but I would step on a roach.

We are funny, funny creatures, we humans. As long as something has beauty, we protect it, savor it; on the contrary, we wipe out that which is not so pretty as if it were the bubonic plague. Exterior beauty is a large component in our perception of things, I think. Oscar Wilde would be proud.

that depends how simple someone's mind is. A butterfly can fly away, a roach is in your house and will come back to a house.

A roach is harmful, butterflies do no harm. This concept would apply to most insects(and animals).

a roach is a pest, a butterfly is not.
but life, unfortunately depends on what talents you possess... in western societies, beauty is considered a very marketable and desirable "talent"
