I believe that the difficulty you are experiencing can be explained by the confusion between goals and desires. Failure to make this distinction can cause terrible results. A desire is something which depends upon not only you, but other people and other things happening in order for the desired result. You have no control over many of these things, nor should you have any control. The only thing over which you have any control is yourself.
A goal, on the other hand, is the result of your efforts to follow a path in your life which is good. As God is the author of goodness and wants you to succeed, anything that is attuned with what He wants for you is a Godly goal. You may not become the head cheerleader or the star quarterback, but following anything that He has in mind for you is a path to true happiness. Your talents are unique and He has given them to you for a purpose. Only you can block them or turn away from them.
You cannot base your feelings of self-worth on the outcomes of your desires. You can only become what God wants you to be. When you make a desire into a goal, and it doesn't come about, you can suffer from depression, anxiety and low self-esteem.
On the other hand, suppose that you become the person God wants you to become, such as a medical doctor. Now let us suppose that a person comes to you for help and you help him to the best of your ability, but various things occur and he gets worse and dies. Naturally you desire that he would be helped and it is only natural that it bothers you that he did not. Now suppose that someone else seeks you out and you help him. You followed your goals in both cases but your desires did not come about in both.
Your ultimate success is assured when you have followed the goals that God has set for you. You only have control over certain things in your life. Follow the path that you were meant to follow and leave your depression behind. Satan wants you to keep your goals and your desires confused. God only wants you to become the very best he designed you to become. Trials and tribulations in one's life only help reveal to us our wrong goals.

Ambition is not always met by depression. It is when ambition slows down or stops do we have time to experience depression. First we have to step back and clarify ambition, which is often mistaken with motivation. Webster defines ambtion as "an eager desire for attainment of honor, fame, or power; aspiration." My definition of ambition is motivation with a focused goal to accomplish. An ambitious person may have multiple goals that they are striving to achieve successfully, which a less motivated person may view as "over" ambitious or just extraordinary. The mental, physical, and emotional energy required to focus on and achieve those goals does not allow much room for any other thoughts or emotions. The journey towards those goals and process of overcoming difficult obstacles causes joy, confidence, and happiness. The successful completion of the desired goal can cause a permanent feeling of bliss when that goal is reflected upon. HOWEVER, the depression enters the scene when ambition is thwarted by a lack of motivation or encountering an obstacle that appears to be impossible. These negative forces can lead to the desire to give up and ultimately feelings of inadequacy and failure. Depression can even occur after a successful achievement of a goal or task, especially when the ambitious person has too much time to reflect on the difficulties achieving those goals or when there appears to be no more goals to work towards. Finally, depression can occur simultaneously with "burn-out". If the ambitious person takes on more goals than he/she can handle, physical and mental fatigue sabotage attainment of the remaining goals and a viscious cycle of decreased motivation leads to giving up and depression.
In closing, ambition is only met with depression when the ambitious person does not recognize when situations arise that can cause depression, such as those examples discussed previously. Ambition is usually met with success, confidence, and improvement of one's self-image, career, or overall status in life.

. . .greeted by depression on your part or on the part of the people you are directing your ambition towards. The question is ambiguous. Do you mean that ambition is followed by depression when your ambitions are not achieved?

Well most of the time it isn't. If your overly ambitious and have visions gradur and shortly after depression comes your way then you might have something called bipolor. Many people famous and infamous have this disorder. It's treatable and most people can reach their dreams with treatment. I would check with your doctor and see if a consult for therapy is needed.
Bipolor is extreme highs and Extreme lows. If your coming up with wonderful idea's and want to become something your not, that is fine, if you practice and follow through. If you end up crying and are rolled up in a ball on your bed because of the depression, then seek help you won't regret it.

Not lately is ambition greeted by opportunity. You run into various obstacles along the way, maybe your need to change your course. Stay focused & ignore the buttholes, as they are there to see to it that you don't get ahead. Try the paved road instead of the dirt road.
