It depends on what you're looking for. For a bit touristy, but fun with rides, lakes, etc. you might try the Wisconsin Dells.
If you like to camp, canoe, etc. look at Northern Michigan. It's really beautiful and has lots of little lakes, rivers, campgrounds, etc. Check out Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties for campgrounds and rentals.
You could also go to Chicago for the big-city experience. It can be somewhat expensive, but there are budget hotels to be found, the trains and busses are cheap and really good and there are lots of free attractions (millenium park, buckingham fountains, parks/lakefront, Navy Pier), and discount packages for museums, etc.

Floating the Illinois river is fun and fairly inexpensive in OK. Also there is some theater things that are fun. Rent a pontoon boat on Lake Tenkiller. Also the Museum is great the the Trail of Tears is neat.

I don't know much about the midwest, but I'm smart enough to know the beach isn't an option. So I'd suggest camping, maybe a river where you could go whitewater rafting... or a lake to fish and canoe?

Louisville is very inexpensive and there are a lot of fun museums, parks, and other kinds of attractions. (see websites, below)
Chicago is awesome but not so affordable.
I also have enjoyed Indy and St. Louis.
