Three mates each gave me ten pounds to buy a second hand TV from my mate (£30 UK). When I got there he said the TV was only 26 pounds (£26 UK cheap.. lol). So he gave four back. I Got back to my mate house and gave them a pound back each because im a nice guy! BUT I took one pound for myself, for carrying the TV back to them - (wouldn't you? It was a 42 inch CRT - ouch! - LOL!). BUT then I re- did the maths.....
Three times £9 (i.e 9 pound from each of my mates) is £27 (27 pounds). Oh, and I have one pound in my pocket for carriing the TV.
Errr hang on...
Thats still only £28.. (28 pounds..) where did the other two go...... To make the 30 I started with..... (£30)... hmm...
Have fun...

Here is where it went.
Two women walking into the same hotel and request the room on the same floor as the three gents. Of course they each pay $15 for the room. ($30 total)
Later, the manager remembers the room is only $25 and gives the bellboy the $5 refund to give to the ladies.
On his way to the room, the bellboy remembers he can't split the $5 between the two women, she he pockets $3 and gives each lady $1 back.
Now, each lady originally paid $15, but got $1 refund back. So really each women paid $14.
$14 times 2 (for the number of women) equals $28
The bellboy pocketed his $3 tip. When you add the $28 to the $3 tip you get $31!
Thats where the extra dollar went.

Your mates were so pleased with the deal that they asked if you could get another TV for each of their mates. They give you £10 each (total £30). When you went to your mate to get more TVs he is so impressed that he lets you have them for £23 pounds. You decide that as your mates are expecting to get the TVs for £9, they would still be happy paying £9 so you keep £4 back for yourself. So each of your three mates have paid £9 totalling £27 plus the £4 in your pocket makes £31. So there is one of the missing pounds!
You go to three other mates getting the same deal yet again and using the same maths your total is again £31 and, hey presto, the second missing pound has turned up!!
(And, yes, I know the above maths is as flawed as the maths in the original puzzle!!)

You must have been very bad at math.
This is how some people cheat others out of money in stores.
Sorry for taking this seriously :-) but here I go:
You spent 26 pounds on the TV. you gave them a pound back and that leaves you 1. You now have a TV and a pound totaling 27 pounds.
You are cheating us in thinking the other way around. There is no other way around. There is no 28 pound total. The 27 pounds they spent is including the 1 you have in your pocket.

Because the tv was 26 ....they only threw in 27 (9 pounds each) because you returned a pound to each you can not use 30 as the amount you had to begin with...the amount you have to work from is 27 (including your pound)

10*3=30
30-26=4
4-3=1
OR 3*1=3(each mate)+1(foryou)=4+26(TV cost)
=30(the amount of cash you had to start with) :)
I do not know how you missed two ...
