it probably isn't. it doesn't seem that it will effect anyone's life, but knowledge and understanding of nature is always important.

It is believed that dark energy and dark matter are responsible for many of the physical processes which are not explainable by ordinary means. The rotation of the Milky Way and also supernovas and other formations in space are believed to have come about due to dark matter.
I believe NASA are trying to develop a powerful propulsion system based on nuclear principles using dark and ordinary matter, similar to the matter/ anti-matter drives of Star Trek.
