Oddly, it may have been an event that few people know of.
Towards the end of WWII, the allied nations signed an agreement at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire to rebuild the economies of the countries involved in the war. It seemed like a good idea, but it may have triggered the Cold War because the institutions the agreement created required those nations to all have, essentially, the same economic system as each other, and not every nation involved in WWII wanted that.
The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and, much later, the World Trade Organization, are the institutions that came out of the agreement, and they are also the organizations which are driving economic globalization today. Unfortunately, economic globalization hasn't been very beneficial, in fact, it has caused severe problems throughout the world, and it is probably responsible for the anti-Western, and anti-capitalist, backlash you see in many parts of the world today.

World War 1. That brought about the raise of Hitler who killed 6 million Jewish people and prevented the birth of another 20 million Jewish people. War World 1 caused the downfall of the Russian monarchy and brought about communism to that particular country. World War 1 cause the Creation of new countries in Europe, Poland and Chezchoslavkia are two such countries formed after that War. That war force the downfall of three royal families in Europe. Also a lot of people were force to flee Russia and Germany after that war and come to North America during the 20's and 30's looking for a better life for their families. Two of these families were my mother's family and my father's family. One of my Dad's brothers died on the way to Canada or while still in Germany maybe due the effects of hunger because Germany was a mess after World War 2 and a lot of people didn't have money for food. My Dad's brother was 5 when he died.

I think the European invasion of the western hemisphere, usually recognized as Columbus' search for a western route to asian spices, was the most cataclysmic historical event ever recorded and has created the world as we know it today - an ongoing subjugation of natural resources and human effort to derive happiness from material accumulation.

The Age of Exploration. The exploration of the world by Westerners is what allowed the world to come together as a whole today and allowed so many different cultures and people to be united. Without this America would not be what it is today.
