If your refrigerator still has any refrigerant in it, the best way to find a leak is to use a leak detector or mix dish soap in a spray bottle and spary all the piping. It could be so small or in the evaporator that you may never find it without an ultrasonic leak detector. At that point you might as well purchase a new refrigerator. If you have no refrigerant then you can buy a small cylinder of nitrogen, pressure it up to 200PSIG and use a leak detector or the soap method. A word of caution, dont use oxygen or any flamable gas to pressurize the refrigeration system. As dumb as that may sound people have actually done it.

There is not enough freon in a residental refrigerator to worry about "it may be leaking", even a pin hole leak will dissapate ALL OF YOUR FREON very quickly.
Your refrigerator will stop working with a day or two of any leak in the system.

It will stop working. The motor will run (probably continuously) but it will not get cold. But Freon leaks are rare, unless there has been damage to the tubing or the condenser under or in the back of the refrigerator. If such damage has occurred, the refrigerator (unless it is quite new) should probably be replaced rather than repaired.

my refrigerator fan runs all the time and the freezer part gets up to 20 to 30 but wont go any lower. Inside of refrigerator was in the good range and then went to about 42 Was working fine a month ago and then started acting up where I was trying to adjust temperature in both settings all the time. some times the freezer would go to 10 below and then a couple hours later it would be at 20 above. Is it my compressor that is going to heck or what Took everything out of refrigerator and shut down for about 4 hours and then started back up and it went to 10 degrees and refrigerator was in normal range and a few hours later the temperature was just above 40 degrees and freezer was 20. I hear the fan running constantly but can tell if compressor is.Is it time for a new refrigerator it is 18 years ols and a whirlpool ?

Go to the store, "Auto Parts, or Builders Mart", and purchase a leak detector.

you would see and hear it, due to the pressure inside the tubes and the difference of temperature, even a light leak...
And your fridge would not refrigerate anymore... no more cold beers!!!
